What are the over the Counter Treatments for Boils

There are several over-the-counter or OTC ointments and creams that are available to cure boils. One can buy them without a prescription.

Some of the over-the-counter ointments that are meant to cure boils are as follows:

• Pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
• Antibacterial ointments such as polysporin, neosporin.
• Triple antibiotics which are combination antibiotics.
• Black drawing salves or ichthammol ointment.
• Terrasil ointment.

Although there is a wide choice of over-the-counter drugs for boils but one should not get carried away by them. The over-the-counter treatment seems to be convenient to use for some people.

However, there are certain risks in using the OTC drugs such as:

• Some of them interact with other drugs, foods and supplements.
• They may cause some-side-effects.
• They are not suitable for long-term use as they may be habit-forming.

Apart from the short-comings of OTC treatment in general there are some serious defects in the specific OTC treatment for boils also.
The OTC treatment for boils has a single-dimensional approach.

Boils can occur due to the presence of excess toxins in the body. If a person has constipation then the harmful toxins cannot be removed from the body through the feces. In such a condition the body tries to remove the toxins through the skin in the form of boils. In case of such an internal problem merely trying to control the bacterial infection by topical application of an OTC ointment can provide only temporary relief.

Sometimes boils may occur due to immune degrading disorders such as diabetes. Such boils are cured only when the blood sugar levels are controlled.

So we find that apart from external factors such as minor bruises, cuts etc boils can occur due to internal health problems as well. In the latter case it is essential to get to the bottom of the problem to cure the boils.

Moreover, OTC drugs often contain antibiotics which are losing their effectiveness in controlling bacterial infections. This is because the bacteria develop a resistance to such drugs.

So it is evident that OTC treatment should be used occasionally for temporary relief. Relying on it for a complete cure is not prudent as they can provide only symptomatic relief.
