What is the treatment for nose boils?

Boils are localized staph infections that can occur on any part of the skin. If mishandled, the boils found in any location can turn out be complicated. However, the nose boils are quite risky in particular and they require an immediate medical examination. This is due to the fact that the veins in the nose lead directly to one’s brain. Hence, if there is even a slight carelessness or negligence in handling the nose boils, then the consequences can be alarming.

The nose plays a vital role in filtering out the microbes and it is also quite susceptible to bacterial and viral infections due to its location.

Nasal vestibulitis is a kind of an infection that occurs at the opening of both the nostrils due to the habits of nose picking and forceful nose blowing. If this infection becomes severe then it may lead to the formation of small boils along the nasal vestibule. These boils can spread the infection beneath the skin. They also happen to be in close proximity to the nasal veins that lead directly to the brain. This increases the chances of a disorder named cavernous sinus thrombosis that can turn out to be life-threatening.

The treatment for nose boils is as follows:

The doctor prescribes oral antibiotics to control the bacterial infection.

Wet and hot compressions are applied thrice daily for 15-20 minutes.

If a boil becomes too large or if it does not show any response to antibiotics then doctors usually lance them surgically.

One should strictly avoid touching them as the nose is a sensitive region and the boils are highly contagious.

A q-tip can be dipped into hydrogen peroxide and used to swipe the nose boils.

Avoid using nose hair clippers lest they introduce more bacteria inside the nose and make matters worse.

According to the TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine, inhaling the steam of wild chrysanthemum and dandelion can help the nasal boils to heal faster. These herbs can also be boiled and used as a hot compress over the affected area.

These remedies can help one in dealing effectively with a nose boil.

Can You Cure Boils with the Help of Warm Milk?

Milk is quite a versatile food when it comes to curing boils by its topical application.

With a few exceptional cases the boils generally get cured without any medical treatment. The smaller ones wither away on their own whereas the rest may require some form of self-care.

The home remedies are immensely useful in curing the boils. They employ the use of medicinal herbs and some natural substances that can cure boils with their therapeutic properties. Milk is one such food that can be used in different ways to cure boils. Milk helps in the exfoliation and the smoothening of the skin.

Since the boils are caused due to bacterial infections the body initially tries to control the infection by using its own natural defense system. If the body’s immune system is weak then the bacteria become powerful and the boils take a long time to suppurate or form pus. Unless the boil discharges its pus it cannot get healed completely. The home remedies such as the poultices are usually applied warm. The medicinal heat helps to draw more blood and therefore more white blood cells at the site of infection. This helps the body to control the bacterial infection quickly. The following home remedies are quite effective in quick ripening of the boil and the subsequent discharge of the infectious pus:

One cup of milk is heated and 3 teaspoon of salt is added to it slowly, to avoid curdling. The milk should be simmered for 10 minutes and then one should add bread crumbs to it. This thickened mixture should be divided into 4 parts. The poultices should be applied after a gap of half an hour.

A paste made by mixing 1 teaspoon each of milk cream and vinegar and a dash of turmeric can be applied on the blood boils to help them ripen quickly.

A slice of bread made with yeast can be dipped into hot milk and the paste can be applied as a poultice.

These remedies are easy to use and can help one in getting rid of a boil by helping it form a head through which the trapped pus can get discharged easily.

What is the treatment for a painful underarm boil?

Although boils can occur on any part of the skin but they tend to occur mostly in regions which are hairy or have friction. The underarm boils may develop due to the following reasons:

Lack of hygiene

Excessive sweating

Shaving and waxing

Weak immunity

Build up of toxins in the system.

There are quite a few home remedies that may be helpful in ripening an underarm boil. This can help one in avoiding the painful lancing, which is a minor surgery that requires medical intervention.

The following remedial measures can be taken for getting rid of the underarm boils:

A carrot poultice can help the underarm boil to suppurate quickly. To prepare it a carrot should be boiled and then mashed into a paste. The paste should be smeared over the underarm boil and the boil should be covered with gauze.

Bran can be mixed with hot water and applied over the underarm boil when the mixture reaches a tolerable temperature. This mixture reduces the inflammation in the boils.

A thick paste can be made by mixing a tablespoon of manuka honey, half a teaspoon of ginger powder, one teaspoon of turmeric powder and a generous pinch of salt. This paste should be applied over the boil and wrapped with a clinging film and then with a cloth. This poultice should be left for a day or two for best results.

In order to control the bacterial infection that causes a boil internally one can drink a solution of half a teaspoon of ground nutmeg that has been added to a cup of hot water. Nutmeg can heal a boil quickly as it improves blood circulation.

A betel leaf should be soaked in warm water. When it softens, castor oil should be applied over it. Then this leaf can be placed on the underarm boil and covered with gauze.

To prevent underarm boils one should sprinkle anti-microbial powder in the armpits.

Hair should be removed very gently from the sensitive underarm region.

Drinking plenty of water prevents a toxin build-up in the body. Hence, one should increase the water intake to prevent the occurrence of boils.

Boils can occur in people of all ages. The newly-born infants are particularly prone getting boils. Boils occur because of localized infections that are caused mostly by the bacterium named staphylococcus aurous.

Unfortunately, the antibiotics that had been successfully used earlier to control such infections have lost their effectiveness. Reckless or over prescription of antibiotics by doctors and the wrong practice of not completing the antibiotic course by the patients have lead to the development of the antibiotic resistant strains of staph.

Nowadays the hospitals have become a kind of a breeding ground of the antibiotic resistant strains of staphylococci. Although this is basically a hospital related problem however, evidence shows that antibiotic resistant strains of staph are no longer confined within the hospitals but have spread outside as well.

Some of the antibiotic-resistant strains of staph may be present in the general population because of their getting seeded amongst the general public by those patients who have undergone a treatment in hospitals.

In quite a few hospitals about 90% of the newly-born infants have been found to have acquired penicillin-resistant staph bacteria in their noses. Whereas the adults have been found to lose the hospital acquired staph bacteria within a short period but the infants have shown to retain the strains till a year or so. Such bacterial strains can manifest themselves clinically in the forms of boils on the infant’s skin.

Before the extensive use of penicillin had become rampant in hospitals, only around 18% of the kids below 5 years of age carried the penicillin-resistant staph bacteria in their noses and throats. However, after penicillin started being used commonly the percentage of such kids rose to 45.

Newly-born infants are quite likely to spread the hospital acquired staph infections amongst their family members.

Although the rate of the hospital acquired staph infections amongst infants is high yet the infants tend to carry the strains till some time until the strains manifest themselves clinically.

If the parents suspects that their infant has developed boils due to a staph infection then they should consult a pediatrician. The doctor’s instructions about the medications should be followed exactly in order to cure the boils in the infant completely.

When the staph bacteria invade the skin a boil usually develops due to the infection. When the infection begins the body develops a fibrous membrane around the boils to prevent the infection from spreading to the surrounding tissues. This wall that surrounds the abscess makes it difficult for the antibiotic drugs to penetrate into the site of infection.

Garlic is a significant medicinal herb that is readily available unlike some other types of herbs. It is a broad spectrum natural antibiotic. The human body does not tend to build up resistance against garlic like it does with some antibiotic drugs. So the benefits of garlic can be utilized without any restrain for a long time.

Garlic is beneficial for extracting pus from the boils because it improves the blood circulation, strengthens the immune system and destroys the bacteria.

On account of its therapeutic properties it is widely used in the cure of skin disorders such as acne, boils and allergies.

Garlic can be used to draw out the pus from the boils or abscess in the following ways:

2 cloves of garlic should be crushed with 5-6 drops of sesame seed oil to form a paste which should be applied over the boil and covered with gauze. When the paste dries up fresh paste should be applied. If there is an irritation on the skin then the paste should be applied after a gap of 1-2 days.

3 cloves of raw garlic can be eaten daily for a month to purify the blood and flush out the toxins.

Since the taste of raw garlic cannot be tolerated by some people so they can take a capsule of 450 mg daily instead for controlling the bacterial infection from within, till a few days.

Garlic juice can be mixed with water in the ratio of 1:3 to make an effective cleansing agent. This mixture can be applied over the boil with a cotton ball to draw out the pus.

Since garlic can cause skin blistering when it is used in excess so it should be applied in moderation for a safe recovery.

In most of the cases, the boils that are triggered due to staph infections, get healed only after they form a head. This is mainly due to the fact that the pus that is formed inside the boil contains the harmful bacteria which can be either alive or dead. It is only after the boils form a head that the pus gets an outlet through which it can get released from the body. Once the boil gets drained completely it usually gets healed soon after.

The normal life-cycle of a boil comprises of the following stages:

A few days after the staph bacteria have invaded the skin a rash becomes visible which may be red, tender and itchy.

The body reacts to the presence of the staph bacteria inside the skin by dispatching the white blood cells to ingest and destroy the bacteria.

With home remedies such as warm compressions, poultices etc the infection soon reaches its climax. The victory of the white blood cells over the staph bacteria is marked by the suppuration process or the boil getting ready to release the infected pus through a minute opening or head.

The ripe boil then gets drained completely and heals thereafter.

So we find that releasing of the pus is an essential part of the healing process as the infected pus gets released from the boil. In case the boil becomes too large and painful but does not form a head in a usual way then it becomes a matter of grave concern. The doctor may resort to a minor surgery called lancing in which after applying local anesthesia, a cut is made on the boil to allow the pus to drain.

This goes to show that the pus needs to be discharged even if it requires performing a minor surgery.

However, in some cases minor boils such as a pimple may get healed without forming a head. This happens because the body tends to reabsorb the boils sometimes. Therefore sometimes we may find that a boil may disappear without discharging the pus as it gets reabsorbed into the body gradually.

Salicylic acid is obtained naturally from plants and fruits so it is commonly known as fruit acid. Topical salicylic acid is usually prescribed to those people who face the problems of pimples and furuncles. It helps to peel off the dead layers of the skin. This action of salicylic acid helps to cure the pimples by unclogging the blocked pores and by reducing the redness and swelling.

Topical salicylic acid is available in the following forms:

Lotions

Shampoos

Creams

Pads

Ointments

Gels

Patches

Certain products that contain salicylic acid are available only by a prescription. Salicylic acid should be used strictly according to the doctor’s advice.

During the initial stage of the treatment the skin tends to become dry. To avoid this, one should try to use salicylic acid less frequently in the beginning and then gradually increase the usage when the skin becomes accustomed to the medication.

Salicylic acid should not be applied over irritated, broken or red skin.

When the Salicylic acid treatment for curing pimples or furuncles begins then the skin condition tends to worsen during the initial stages of the treatment. However, there is no need to panic because this happens only because the skin needs some time to get accustomed to salicylic acid. This treatment may take some time to show good results. Hence, one should try to be a little patient with it.

Before one starts the Salicylic acid treatment for pimples or furuncles the following steps should be taken for a safe recovery:

A person should tell the doctor if he or she has an allergy to either salicylic acid or any other medication.

One should also inform the doctor about all the other medications that are being taken side-by side or the ones that one may be planning to take.

Topical Salicylic acid can cause certain side effects such as skin irritation and a stinging sensation. If the side-effects become severe or persist for long then one should tell the doctor about it.

If these steps are followed then one can utilize the benefits of salicylic acid and get rid of pimples and furuncles safely.

Bread Poultice for Splinters – An Invaluable Home-remedy

Poultices are being used since ages to alleviate muscle and nerve pain, sprains and for drawing out the infected pus from boils, ulcers etc. They are also helpful in drawing out splinters or foreign objects that get embedded into the skin.

In the olden times, poultices were a quite popular form of treatment. The methods of preparing them have been passed down to generations. So we find that they have not lost their significance even in the modern times. They employ the foods and herbs that have therapeutic properties.

Poultices are an easy way of tackling the problem of a splinter. They are totally safe to use. They save one from the trouble of trying to remove the splinter with needles as this may put one at risk of an infection.

Awareness about the various poultices and a first- aid box come in handy in times of emergencies.

Generally speaking a poultice acts is the following ways:

It provides medicinal heat to the affected region which accelerates the healing process.

It sucks out the splinters, debris or the toxins through the opening in the skin.

It utilizes therapeutic herbs that have a calming and soothing affect on one’s skin.

Moldy bread is used to remove splinters mainly because of its natural penicillin content. As a matter of fact, Although Alexander Fleming was the first person to discover penicillin but he was not the first one to use it. In the olden times, moldy bread was used to cure wounds and infections.

The method of using a bread poultice for splinters is as follows:

The affected area should be wiped clean.

Take some stale bread crumbs with mold on it.

Put the bread crumbs in a dish and pour boiling water over it. Place it in a warm place for a few minutes.

Throw away the water and mash the bread.

Place the bread as hot as one can tolerate on the affected area.

If left overnight the bread poultice can grow its own penicillin in the humid environment. Bread poultice is quite useful because of its bland and non-irritating properties.

Honey is an amazing gift from nature which is both a nutritional and a healing food. It has antibiotic, antifungal and antiseptic properties.

Honey can resist the growth of bacteria that trigger boils in the following ways:

The microbial properties of honey make it difficult for bacteria to grow and multiply.

Honey is acidic in nature whereas certain bacteria cannot grow in an acidic environment.

Honey deprives the bacteria of water and oxygen which they need to grow. Although honey contains some water but it is not available to the bacteria as it is supersaturated with sugar.

It is an anti-inflammatory agent and reduces the pain and swelling.

It is helpful in reducing scarring.

Manuka honey is a special type of honey that has an ingredient known as Unique Manuka Factor or UMF. UMF has proved to be more effective in combating bacterial infections then the ordinary honey. The methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus or MRSA strains of bacteria are resistant to certain antibiotics. Manuka honey has proven to be powerful enough to deal with the stubborn MRSA too.

During an acne breakout the pores of the skin get clogged. The trapped sebum gets infected by the bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes which are the causal factor of acne. Manuka honey is more effective in penetrating the epidermis of the acne than the synthetic medications.

Warm honey can be applied over the boil or else honey can be used along with some other substances such as:

What Causes Recurrent Boils on the Nose?

Boils are localized bacterial infections that can occur on any part of the skin.

The boils that occur on the nose can lead to quite dangerous consequences. This is because the nasal chambers usually have colonies of benign staph bacteria. Minor infections may occur in the nose due to the habit of nose picking or blowing the nose too hard. This can lead to boils on the skin of the nose tip. The doctors are usually concerned about such boils because the veins from the nose lead to the brain. If the nose boils are not treated on time or if they are meddled with or squeezed then a life-threatening disorder known as cavernous sinus thrombosis can occur. The main cause of this potentially risky disorder is a bacterial infection that spreads from the nose, sinuses, eyes, teeth, ears or the facial skin.

So we find that the boils on the nose are quite risky and hence they should be treated with utmost care. If in spite of a proper medical treatment the boils keep recurring, then the situation can become quite grave.

Boils usually tend to recur due to the following reasons:

Some people carry the spores of the staph bacteria genetically.

A family member who is the staph carrier can spread the infection through contact.

Unhygienic conditions.

Obesity

Immunocompromising diseases

Weak immune system.

In order to avoid the recurrence of boils on the nose one should follow these methods:

One should use chlorhexidine or povidone iodine skin cleansers while bathing.

Oral antibiotics such as Rifampicin or low dose Clindamycin can destroy the nasal bacteria till a few months.

Some boils are resistant to treatment. The pus from such boils should be sent for a bacterial culture and sensitivity test. The reports help the doctor in deciding which antibiotic can be prescribed to cure those particular bacteria.

Control diabetes

Although it is not possible to get rid of the nasal bacterial colonies permanently, yet the above- mentioned remedial measure can help in reducing them.
