Boils are a type of skin abscess which form pus-filled pockets beneath the skin. They occur mostly due to the presence of staph bacteria. These bacteria sneak into the human skin through tiny openings caused by abrasions, cuts etc which have been left unattended.
The acne boils or pimples are the outcome of clogged skin pores. This happens due to over production of sebum, which is an oily and waxy substance secreted by the skin to keep the skin’s surface soft and supple.

- The removal of pus in case of large boils should not be done oneself. There is a risk involved in doing so because the boils contain infectious matter which can spread to other regions if it is not handled under medical supervision. The drainage or lancing of the boil is a minor surgery which helps in relieving the pain. First of all the boil has to be brought to a head. Then the doctor numbs the boil area by applying local anesthesia. A cut is made with a sterilized scalpel on the skin which enables the pus to come out from the boil. The pus is wiped off and the nearby area is cleaned with an antiseptic lotion. The boil is covered with a bandage. The doctor supervises the condition of the boil a few times and also changes the dressing. The pus continues to trickle from the boil. Finally when the boil has completely erupted it gets dried within a few days and gets cured completely.
- If lethargy, malaise and a fever are experienced along with a face boil then the concerned person must consult a doctor immediately. A bacterial culture would help the doctor in deciding the course of antibiotics.
- If in spite of the face boil treatment there is a spate of more boils then all the family members should get a bacterial culture done. This is because the bacterial infection can spread amongst the family members.
- For a long term relief, maintaining hygiene as well as a well balanced diet forms a part of the face boil treatment. Adequate nutritional intake helps not just in building a strong immune system but it also helps in detoxification. The toxins can cause septicemia or blood poisoning.
