A bruise is a region of skin discoloration that occurs due to the breaking of the tiny blood vessels. This leads to the subsequent leakage of their contents into the tissues beneath the skin.

The body tries to remove the dead blood cells by dispatching its white blood cells that form a part of the immune system. Some bruises can last for months. The bruises on the bone are the most painful. Bruises require immediate medical attention if they show signs of an infection around them such as pus, drainage or red streaks or fever.

Bacterial infections usually tend to develop around the bruise that has an open wound too. Symptoms of such infection include pus, fever, swelling and a reddened area around the infection.

Boils are pockets of infection in the skin that are filled with pus. They are also bacterial infections. Hence, we find that a bruise can seem to be like a boil sometimes due to an accompanying infection. When a bacterial infection begins the body’s defense system tries to control it by sending the white blood cells to the infected region to ingest the bacteria. The reason why a white tip develops during a bacterial infection in a boil is the presence of the white blood cells.

Hence, in some cases the boils get camouflaged as a bruise. It is only if people tend to apply pressure over the bruise that pus and blood get discharged.

Bruises can be the outcome of an injury. So these simple preventive methods should be followed to avoid a bruise:

  • One should wear a seat-belt while traveling in a car.
  • One should be careful while climbing a stair-case.
  • Those who play soccer and basketball should use proper sports equipment such as a shin guard and knee pads.
  • Hockey and football players should use thigh pads, elbow pads and hip guards.
  • The kids should be taught how to be careful.
  • The bruised area should not be overworked.

If a bruise-like boil is detected then to be on the safe side one should have it examined by a doctor.
