How to Avoid Boils on Hips Caused by Chaffing of the Skin
Generally speaking, chafing refers to an irritation or soreness of the skin that is caused by friction. It can occur due to the following factors:
- Rubbing together of two parts of our body
- Rubbing of the skin against clothes.
- Rubbing of any part of the body against any object constantly.
Due to these reasons chaffing can occur in different parts of the body such as the hips, armpits, inner thighs, groin etc.
Chafing of the skin of the hips is quite common amongst athletes, cyclists and obese people.
Chafing of the skin on the buttocks that is caused by sitting for long durations, riding, cycling etc can cause rashes, boils and pilonidal cysts.
Boils on the hips can cause a lot of pain and discomfort because of their location. Hence, certain precautionary measures should be taken to avoid them, such as:
- The skin should be kept dry by using talcum powder because moisture from the sweat can aggravate the chafing.
- Keep yourself well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water. This allows one to perspire freely. If one stops perspiring then our sweat gets transformed into salt crystals which increase friction.
- Cyclists should wear shorts that are snug but not tight. This is because tight shorts can cause chafing of the skin and cause boils. The shorts should be padded ones which are seamless and contoured. Regular underwear should be avoided as it has unnecessary seams which can trap moisture, heat and bacteria.
- The shorts should be changed right after each ride. This prevents boil formation on the hips.
- Using a petroleum-free and non-staining lubricant is a good idea to avoid friction while walking, riding or exercising.
- Wearing an extra pair of cycling shorts can provide with extra cushioning to the cyclists. This can prevent chafing of the skin as the friction gets shifted to the two fabrics.
- Before riding or cycling one can lubricate the hips with a petroleum jelly to reduce chafing.
If we are a little cautious then we can easily avoid the annoying boils on the hips caused due to chafing of the skin.

Hi,
I am 27 year old male. I am suffering from boils on hips since last one-and half year. Everytime, when boils originate, I take antiobiotic tablets of Amoxillyin & Potassium Cluvanate 625 mg thrice a day. The Boils are very painful and I am not able to sit or sleep on the bed properly. The boils re-occur very often. I am really in a problematic situation.
I have read your article but I would like to know whether there is any infection, probably by bacteria. Are there any medications which can prevent boils from re-occurence.
Thanks.
Hello Pranav,
First of all take care of your hygiene, wash your undergarments using Dettol (make it a practice) and do not use Amoxicyllin frequently because your body will become resistant to this particular medicine. Also use medicated soap for bathing. Use cotton undergarments. Read following articles which might help you:
