A boil is a general name given to the different types of bacterial infections varying in their degrees such as acne, pimples, furuncles, carbuncles etc

Boils are a kind of a skin problem arising due to an infected hair follicle. The bacteria called staphylococcus aurous enter the skin through abrasions and minor cuts. It thrives and multiplies quickly, thereby resulting in an infection. The body gears up its defense system and dispatches white blood cells on the infected site to kill the bacteria. This results in formation of pus which consists of these white blood cells, bacteria along with the dead skin tissues. These boils are red and painful.

A cyst on the other hand is a sac containing pus, air etc which is surrounded by a membrane. The major variation between a cyst and a boil is the presence of this membrane in the cysts which slackens the process of epithelization and delays the healing of the tissues as well.

Cystic acne is also called Modular acne. It is a severe form of acne. It is so called because of the development of cysts on the skin when the acne forms. These cysts are quite troublesome and they may spread quickly if enough care is not taken. If a person with cystic acne scratches the acne, the bacteria within the cysts get a medium of spreading. Sometimes, the cystic acne leaves dark marks and scars behind on the skin. It may also defect the skin permanently by forming pits on them. The skin may end up looking dark, rough and ugly. These types of cysts are quite inconvenient and they need to be removed by lancing. The doctor has to apply local anesthesia to numb the infected area and after making an incision, he drains out the pus and any other kind of debris sticking inside.

If the pilonidal cysts are recurrent, the doctor may need an invasive technique of surgery. They are often discussed with the patient beforehand. The doctor can leave the wound open for some time after he has lanced the drain. In this method, the wound may heal slowly but the chances of recurrence of pilonidal cyst may get less.

In the other method the doctor may close the wound as soon as the surgery is over. This may help the cyst in getting healed faster but on the contrary, the chances of recurrence would be greater.

After the surgery is over, a suitable wound care routine should be followed. This includes cleaning of the wound after some time. The area has to be numbed in order to have a detailed examination of the pilonidal cyst. The affected area has to be kept clean without any hair, to prevent the infection from spreading.
