Appearance of Pus Filled Follicles – A Brief Guide

Pus filled follicles are the boils that occur on the skin due to staph infections. They are medically referred to as skin abscess. These pus-filled pockets can affect the hair follicles. They can also affect the underlying sebaceous tissues if there is a deep-seated infection.

If the boils are mild ones then they do not require any treatment. The only care that is required to be taken is that the boils should not be squeezed of pressed. Doing this in a desperate bid to get rid of them can aggravate the problem. This is because boils infection is caused by the staph bacteria and is highly contagious.

The symptoms of boils include:

  • Appearance of tender, itchy red-colored patch.
  • A tiny nodule appears gradually grows in size.
  • Pus forms in the boil. This becomes evident by the appearance of a white tip on the boil.
  • Certain boils lead to swollen lymph glands, red streaks radiating around them or are accompanied by chills and fever. Such boils need immediate medical attention as they indicate the spread of infection. If the boil infection spreads into the bloodstream then septicemia can occur. This is a risky and life-threatening disorder.

Boils can be caused by the following:

  • Bacterial intrusion into the skin through cuts bruises etc.
  • An ingrown hair.
  • Using the towel of an infected person.
  • Weak immune system caused by an improper diet.
  • Blocking of the oil glands.
  • Skin irritation caused by skin-tight clothes.
  • Sitting for long durations can cause boils on the buttocks.
  • Unhygienic surroundings.

The large boils can be quite irksome. They need some form of treatment as they can be painful. Lancing of boils is a minor surgery that involves an incision, drainage of the pus and dressing up the wound. Some antibiotics can also be prescribed at this stage to control the spread of infection.

The boils get cured easily after they have formed pus. Some boils may take some time in ripening or suppurating. They can be brought to a head quickly by various methods such as:

  • Poultices,
  • Hot and cold compression.
  • Drawing salve.
  • Herbal therapy.

Thus, we find that boils are not a complicated problem but they can become one if we meddle with them unnecessarily. Moreover, medical attention should be sought if they do not respond to natural cure.
