Are Boil Contagious – Some Facts

Boils are the result of a staph infection which is caused by the bacteria named staphylococcus aurous.

These bacteria can be present on the skin surface and even in the nasal passage of some people. As long as they are present outside the body they tend to be harmless. However, sometimes they get a chance to sneak into the skin through some cut, bruise or minor wound which has been left uncovered. Once they get within the human body they make it a breeding ground and start multiplying. It is at this juncture that they become infectious in nature.

The infection can spread amongst the members of a family if precautions are not taken. It does not spread through air but it can spread if a person uses a towel, napkin etc of the infected person. Hence it is advised to avoid sharing personal towels with others.

It is imperative that the person who suffers from boils should avoid touching the infected part. If he happens to touch it while applying some ointment, cream etc then he should wash his hands with an anti-bacterial soap.

Boils can spread due to negligence not just in the nearby regions but also to other people through contaminated items.

When the boils mature or get ripe they form a head. The accumulated pus gradually trickles out from the head and the boil gets drained. When this happens, whether naturally or while getting the boil lanced by a doctor, the pus has to be wiped off immediately.  Some preventive measures which should be taken due to the boils contagious nature are as follows:

  1. The infected area should be covered by a sterilized bandage. This will prevent the bacterial infection from spreading to other people.
  2. Touching the boils should be prevented especially when the boil is ready to suppurate. If a person happens to touch food after touching the boil with bare hands, then the staph bacteria can also lead to a food poisoning.
  3. Sharing personal of items such as towels, combs etc should be avoided.
  4. Razors should be used carefully as a minor cut can also lead to a bacterial infection.
  5. The pus which oozes out from the ripe boil should be dealt with carefully. Hands should be washed immediately with an anti-bacterial soap. The nearby skin should also be wiped with an anti-septic lotion because the pus contains the bacteria which are on the look out for new breeding grounds.
  6. Taking a shower is considered safe as compared to using a bath tub especially when the boil has erupted.
  7. Nose picking must be avoided because the staph bacterial form colonies in the nose of some people. The bacteria stick to the hands and contaminate the objects are touched by that hand.
  8. The antibiotic course prescribed by the general physician should be completed as this helps in controlling the spread of the infection.
  9. If the boils occur in the members of a family then they should get a bacterial culture done. This will help the doctor in understanding that which member is the actual carrier of the staph bacteria.
  10. Squeezing or pressing of the boils can not just spread the infection elsewhere on the skin but also spread it to the internal organs or the blood stream. Blood poisoning or septicemia can be fatal. Hence meddling with the boil should be avoided before it ripens. Once it softens, it can get drained naturally or surgically and kept clean and dry.

Draw out the boils infection with the powerful anti bacterial black salve boil treatment

A salve refers to a medical cream which is used to soothe certain parts of the body.

There are two different herbal products which are some times referred to as black salve. Hence one needs to be a little cautious while buying the actual black salve. The actual ointment is referred to as the black drawing salve and has ichthammol. It is used to draw out skin infections due its strong anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It is used in the treatment of boils, for removing of splinters from the skin and for treating the pus filled eruptions found on the skin as well.

The ointment with which this black drawing salve is commonly confused with is black salve, an ointment which contains bloodroot and has been used since a long time as an alternative treatment for cancer.

Black drawing salve boil treatment can be availed in various tubes, containers etc. It can also be prepared at home. However if one opts for a home made one then the instructions for making it should be carefully followed.

This treatment is a time tested one and has been used successfully over the years. The treatment is based on the belief that certain types of infections and impurities can be drawn out through the skin by some effective substances such as black drawing salve. The main ingredient of black drawing salve, ichthammol, imparts the black color to this salve.

The black salve boil treatment helps the body in fighting off the foreign objects like splinters and organisms like bacteria. It is a mild preparation as opposed to the other black salve, which if not used under proper medical guidance, may burn the normal tissues besides the affected ones.

Boils or skin abscess, appear as a reaction of the body to the presence of certain foreign objects in the skin or an infected hair follicle. The boils may be caused due to an external reason such as bacteria entering the skin through minor cuts, abrasion etc or due to an internal cause such as an allergic reaction to certain food substances or over production of sebum. In both the cases, there is an infection caused by the bacteria. Therefore, the black drawing salve is quite useful because of its anti bacterial property in curing skin boils.

As in case of all alternate treatments, one should have the boil diagnosed by a doctor, if the need arises. If boils are accompanied by fever, it implies that the infection is severe. Hence a doctor should be consulted to avoid complications. In case of an allergy to any ingredient of the drawing salve ointment, the use should be discontinued.

The drawing salve ointment resembles tar and has a thick consistency. The main ingredient of this ointment, ichthammol or ichthyol, has been widely used in creams, shampoos and soaps which are used to treat acne, dandruff etc.

For the black salve boil treatment to prove effective, at least 10% – 20 % of ichthammol should be present. Lesser amounts would make the salve products ineffective.

Black drawing salve is also referred to as Black ointment and ichthyol salve. Besides its primary ingredient ichthammol it also contains some herbs such as calendula, Echinacea etc. These herbs are popular for their anti bacterial and soothing properties as well as for reducing pain and inflammation of the skin.

The black salve boil treatment works in the following ways:

  1. When the drawing salve is applied to the boil, it draws out any splinter which may have entered the skin and caused the infection.
  2. The salve should be evenly applied over the infected part and covered overnight or for a few days.
  3. This salve easily penetrates into the tissues. Its main ingredient softens the skin, thereby, increasing blood circulation. More blood means more white blood cells to fight off the infection. This results in the formation of pus around the foreign object after which it gradually gets ejected along with the pus.

The black drawing salve is a versatile cure which is widely used not only to reduce boils irritation but also to heal them successfully.

Cellulitis Boil- Its Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Cellulitis boil is mostly caused by the bacteria streptococcus (strep) and staphylococcus. These bacteria infect the skin and make it swollen and red. This condition calls for an immediate medical examination.

If left unattended, a cellulitis boil may even lead to life-threatening infections of the heart, lymph nodes and the blood. If the strep cells enter into the bloodstream then they can cause cardiac impairment. Gangrene and flesh eating bacterium can develop which make amputation a necessity.

The main causes of occurrence of the cellulitis boils are as follows:

  • The bacteria which normally live on the skin may enter through a cut on the skin.
  • Athlete’s foot makes the skin dry and cracked. This makes the skin susceptible to cellulitis boils.
  • People suffering from chicken pox are vulnerable to developing cellulitis boils especially if they scratch their skin.
  • If someone has got a second or a third degree burn then the skin forms blisters and opens up. This may also trigger a bacterial infection.
  • A dog or a cat scratch may lead to cellulitis.
  • Certain spider bites also causes this skin infection.
  • Diabetics are prone to getting this infection on their feet.

Cellulitis boils are not contagious like impetigo making it less risky. How if this condition is coupled with fever, chills, malaise or swollen lymph glands then one needs to get it diagnosed.

Some of the preventive measures that need to be taken are:

  • Any type of cut on the skin should be cleaned and covered. Topical antibiotics should be applied over the infected part.
  • Children should avoid meddling with old scabs and pocks from chicken pox.
  • In case a person is bitten by a poisonous spider then a doctor should be consulted without any delay.
  • It is advised not to ignore one’s feet. They should be checked regularly for any sign of athlete’s foot.
  • The toenails should be trimmed carefully lest the bacteria get a chance to enter into the skin.
  • People who suffer from suppressed immunity due to chemotherapy, HIV and lupus should not leave any wound or cut on the skin unattended.
  • If in spite of the vigilance and the preventive measures the infection occurs than a timely cure is essential.

The doctor needs to make out whether the infection is cellulitis or not with the help of tests.

Derivatives of penicillin are mostly used to cure cellulitis. If the causative bacteria are resistant to a particular antibiotic then some other suitable antibiotic has to be prescribed.

In a lot of cases oral antibiotics prove ineffective. This is because they are unable to penetrate into the skin. Intravenous antibiotics are administered in a hospital to treat such cases.

The doctors have to choose a suitable antibiotic depending upon various factors such as the location and extent of the infection. The treatment also depends on which type of bacteria is causing the problem and the overall health of the person.

Turmeric for Boils- A Time-Tested Formula

Herbs have been an integral part of the allopathic medicines in the early years of the 20th century. Even till the mid-twentieth century nearly half the medicines had herbal ingredients. Turmeric has also been mentioned in many ancient texts.

Turmeric is quite popular in India and is widely used in the Indian cuisine.

It is a multi-purpose herb which is used to cure different ailments.

A few of its therapeutic properties are that of a blood purifier, germicidal, anti-inflammatory and a pain reliever.

It has been extensively used in the various medical sciences such as the unani, TCM, ayurveda etc. In ayurveda it is used to cleanse the whole body and to end pain.

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses turmeric to improve the blood circulation.

Research has proved the anti-inflammatory properties and other benefits of turmeric which make it a power herb.

The main curcuminoid which is found in turmeric is curcumin. This is one of the best anti-inflammatory known to mankind. It is also anti-tumor and anti-oxidant.

Turmeric boils treatment is quite effective due to its therapeutic nature.

Taking a natural course is considered the best in case of boils. This is because these days a lot of bacteria have developed resistance towards the antibiotics which are commonly used to as a medical cure for boils.

Turmeric comes to the rescue when most of the treatments have failed. Besides having curcumin which is anti-inflammatory agent turmeric acts as a good blood cleanser too. Presence of toxins in blood is also instrumental in causing boils.

Turmeric is helpful in treating MRSA boils which are difficult to cure with antibiotics.

Turmeric can be used by mixing the powder with warm water and drinking the mixture. This should be followed by the intake of 2 glasses of water.

Turmeric and boils seem to create magic by the way the boils vanish when turmeric is applied to them. Since a timely action can prevent further complication hence it is best to take turmeric in the form of a mixture. This nips the boil in the bud and does not give it a chance to grow.

Turmeric can also be mixed with other natural substances for better results.

A thick paste can be made by mixing turmeric and ginger powder along with salt and honey, preferably Manuka honey. The paste is applied over the boil and tied with a cling-film first and with a cloth over it to keep it warm. This poultice should be kept for a day or two for best results.

If during this period turmeric mixture is taken internally also, it helps in a quick recovery.

Turmeric can also be used in the form of a capsule. A 450 mg capsule, when taken daily helps in curbing the boils.

A little care has to be taken while using a turmeric poultice as its stains are quite immovable. So turmeric should not be brought in contact with the clothes.

Turmeric can also be included in one’s diet because of its blood cleansing and anti-inflammatory properties.

Boils Homeopathic-Best Treatment for Long Term Relief

Homeopathic treatment is based on the notion that like treats like. The pills activate the body’s own defense system. In this mode of treatment there are many effective medicines which can cure boils.

A boil is a localized staph infection which creates pus-filled pockets beneath the skin.

People who suffer from recurrent boils usually have a week immune system. The homeopathic boil treatment soothes and comforts the person and heals the infection.

The boil appears when the body dispatches its white blood cells to kill the germs. If the boil does not get any attention during its initial stages then it may grow larger and even complicated. The ongoing struggle between the white blood cells and the staph bacteria destroy the aerola tissue. When the boil finally reaches its last stage and gets ready to erupt, it discharges the pus which consists of the dead aerola tissue, bacteria and the white blood cells.

Boils occur mostly in hairy parts of the skin and where there is maximum friction. Sometimes they tend to occur in places which make movement difficult. Hence, one should get on ones toes as soon as the symptoms of boils appear so as to redress the problem.

There are some effective boils homeopathy treatments which are widely used to rectify this problem. The best ones are as follows:

  • Belladonna is used to treat boils when they are in the initial stage. The pus does not form in the primary stage so the boil is red in color. The infected area is inflamed and the boil is sore and tender. This is when Belladona is used to nip the infection in its bud.
  • Hepar sulphuris calcareum is used in the cases where the boils tend to spread to the nearby region. It is also quite effective in curing boils which are slow to heal. Such boils have deep-seated infection in which the pus pockets are quite deep and may even affect the underlying tissues besides the skin. Such boils are sore and sensitive with an acute pain. The people who suffer from such a splinter- like pain in the boils are sensitive to cold.
  • Silica terra is used to cure boils when they do not wither away even after they have got drained of all the pus. A dose of this pill thrice daily till three days helps in the drying up of the boil.
  • Arnica Montana 200 is used to treat those boils which occur all over the body during the summers. This medicine is effective in curing those numerous and widely scattered boils.
  • Aconitum napellus is used to treat red boils which are accompanied with fever and a burning sensation.
  • Mercurius solubilis 200 is an ideal choice for large and pus-filled boils which tend to recur. The medicine absorbs the white pus of the boil which helps in the drying up of the boil.
  • Sulphur has been used since ages in curing skin ailments. This medicine is used to treat boils in scrofulous people.
  • Tarent is used to treat boils which develop rapidly. Some boils are quite hard and bluish in color. There are others which are very painful and create a burning sensation on the skin. If these symptoms occur then tarent is the best choice for the homeopathic treatment.
  • Arsenicum album is used to treat those boils which are deep-seated infections and bring about a burning sensation.
  • Echinacea Angustifolia is a popular herb which is used as a homeopathic medicine to cure those people who have boils accompanied with chills and a feeling of lethargy.

Pus Filled Boils Symptoms and Causes

Boils are medically referred to as skin abscess. They are pus-filled pockets which infect the hair follicle. If they are deep-seated then they can also affect the underlying subcutaneous tissues.

The mild boils do not require any treatment. They get dried soon after their appearance on the skin and do not bring about any pain.

However some boils become large and painful. They take long in getting cured and require some form of treatment to relieve the pain and discomfort.

The symptoms of the pus filled boils are:

  • Appearance of an itchy and tender, red colored patch on the skin.
  • A tiny nodule which grows in size.
  • Development of a white tip in the boil indicating the presence of pus.
  • If the boil infection has spread then the nearby lymph glands may get swollen.
  • In rare cases the infection spreads to the blood resulting in chills, high fever and rapid heart beat. This condition is called septicemia.

The main causes why pus filled boils appear on the skin are as follows:

  • Sometimes the skin is invaded by the bacteria from the surroundings along with a splinter, dust or dirt particles.
  • The bacteria present in the nasal chamber of some people get a chance of entering into the skin via a minor cut, rash or bruise. Such bacteria infect the hair follicle and make the skin their breeding ground.
  • If a person happens to use a towel or some other personal item belonging to someone who has boils, then the infection may spread as boils are highly contagious in nature.
  • An ingrown hair can also clog the hair follicle and cause a boil.
  • The blocking of the sweat glands with sebum can cause boils.
  • Sometimes the weakness of the immune system makes one prone to boils.
  • Lack of minerals and vitamins also make the immune system weak and the body becomes unable to tackle the infection.

Boils can be prevented by maintaining hygiene. Scented soaps should be replaced by anti-bacterial ones. One should avoid using the personal items belonging to others such as a towel lest it carries the staph bacteria. A balanced diet plays an important role in building up the immunity and making the body well-equipped to tackle the infection. The skin should be kept well scrubbed in order to prevent the skin’s pores from clogging due to the process called sloughing or shedding of the old cells.

The boils can be lanced or drained if they become large and painful. It is imperative that they are ripened before the pus is removes. The boils pus contains dead tissues, bacteria and the white blood cells, which are present there to fight off the infection. Since the boils are contagious, it is wiser to have the boil lanced by a doctor.

Mishandling of the boils can spread the infection to the internal organs. The boils near the mouth should not be licked under any circumstances. Such carelessness may cause blood poisoning or a fatal abscess of some internal organ such as brain.

Drawing Boils-Remove the Pus and Heal the Skin Infection

Boils are highly contagious skin infections that are generally caused by the bacteria named staphylococcus aurous.

They differ in there severity and locations on the human body. They can either be harmless ones which get cured without any treatment or else quite large and painful.

Once the staph bacteria sneak into the skin via a cut or abrasion, they start breeding beneath the skin. Their presence in the body triggers an infection. The affected part of the skin turns red and itchy.

This is followed by the appearance of a tiny nodule which gradually grows in size. After some time the body sends white blood cells to kill the bacteria. This results in the formation of pus inside the boil which has a white color. The pus also contains the dead skin tissues as well as the bacteria.

For the boil to get healed it is very crucial that the pus gets expelled from it. Pus gets formed in the boil only when the infection reaches its last stage and the boil is ready to suppurate or erupt.

Sometimes due to the ongoing infection and the struggle between the bacteria and the white blood cells, the boils take long to ripen or form pus. This is the juncture at which the drawing boils treatment becomes imperative to bring relief.

Some of the unique methods of drawing boils are as follows:

  • Hydrotherapy is an effective method and is done with the help of warm water and a cloth. The cloth is dipped into the water and wringed out. This is placed over the boil till it retains its heat. Once it gets cooled down, the same procedure has to be repeated. The heat imparted to the boil softens the tissues which surround the boil. This weakens them and increases the blood flow into the area. The blood carries along with it white blood cells which fight off the bacteria. Once the bacteria get defeated the boil gets ready to suppurate. This is the point at which the drawing boils is effective and ends the infection. The erupted boil soon gets dried up. Before the pus formation and development of a head or an opening, drawing boils is not effective as the infection is still on. Moreover squeezing an immature or hard boil is dangerous as it can lead to blood poisoning or spill the bacteria to some other spot.
  • Hot and cold compress is effective too in bringing the boil to a head or an opening. Once the cloth soaked in hot water cools down, it is replaced instantly with a cloth soaked in chilled water.
  • Vegetable poultice can be made by placing a warm slice of tomato or onion over the boil. The outer leaves of the cabbage can be used as an alternative too.
  • Bread compress is an age old and effective remedy. The slice of bread is soaked into hot milk and placed over the boil and tied. It should be replaced after it gets cooled down.
  • Tea bags which have been soaked in warm water can be used to heal the boils too.
  • Turmeric, vinegar and milk cream can be made into a paste and used as an ointment for the boil.
  • The betel leaf is warmed and some castor oil is applied over it. This is placed over the boil for quick removal of the pus.

  1. Boils are a particular type of staph infection which gets triggered mostly by the bacterium named staphylococcus aurous.
  2. They can occur on any part of the skin but tend to crop up more in places where the skin gets exposed to a lot of friction and moisture due to sweating.
  3. Boils are assigned specific names in the field of medicine. The furuncles are caused by an infection in the hair follicle. They tend to affect the hair follicle and the nearby tissues.
  4. The carbuncles refer to a group of boils which crop up in the same location. Carbuncles are deep-seated infections which affect the underlying subcutaneous tissues also.
  5. Pilonidal cysts crop up along the buttock crease mostly due to prolonged sitting. This can happen during journeys or by not taking regular breaks while doing desk jobs.
  6. An eye stye occurs due to the clogging of the oil glands in the hair follicles.
  7. Acne or pimples are usually found amongst adolescents due to an increase in hormonal activity which stimulates the sebaceous or oil glands. This increases the production of the sebum which is an oily substance that helps in keeping the skin moisturized. The sebum and the old skin cells which the skin sheds frequently clog the skin pores. Thus, an infection starts in the skin causing acne.
  8. Cystic acne is a more severe type of acne. It calls for a proper medical treatment.
  9. Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic problem of the sweat glands in which the sweat glands get clogged due to a variety of reasons. This chronic condition results in multiple large, red boils on the buttocks, breasts, groin, and armpits.
  10. Boils can occur on the skin due to the skin being afflicted to cuts, abrasion or wounds which are not kept covered and disinfected. Such tiny openings give a chance to the bacteria to enter the human skin and trigger an infection. The bacteria may enter through foreign objects such as contaminated splinters or dust particles. The bacteria are also found on the skin of some healthy people. These are called bacterial colonies which are harmless as long as they do not enter the skin through some channel.

Some useful information on boils regarding its treatment if the infection is severe:

    1. The boils can also be a result of some underlying disorder such as a weak immune system, diabetes, HIV positive cases etc. Recurrent boils should be medically examined. If they turn out to be MRSA boils then they require a proper antibiotic course.
    2. Boils are highly contagious in nature. They should not be meddled with lest the infection spreads to some other part of the skin or into the bloodstream. This may lead to blood poisoning.
    3. It is essential to have a well balanced diet to strengthen one’s immune system. Detoxification is essential too as the toxins also lead to an infection in the internal organs.
    4. Poultices and hydrotherapy is the best home treatment for curing boils.
