Staph Infection in Nose – Its treatment, Symptoms and Description of Various Staph Infections
The bacteria staphylococcus aurous is usually found in the nasal passages and the skin of a lot of people. If observed under a microscope, they resemble a bunch of grapes. These bacteria are facultative and do not need oxygen for survival.
The colonization of these bacteria on the skin or in the nasal passage is harmless. However, if these pathogens get an opportunity to enter into the body through any cut or opening in the skin, they multiply rapidly.
There are quite a few staph infections which affect the nose such as impetigo, carbuncles, furuncles etc.
The symptoms of staph infection nose are:
- Scratchy and hurting cuts on the nose.
- Furuncles,
- Carbuncles.
These staph bacteria multiply beneath the skin and cause boils on the skin. Red colored bumps appear on the skin in case of the staph infection in nose. These boils grow in size as they become suppurate. Finally, they get drained after they postulate or form a head or opening. The furuncles are the milder forms of skin boils caused due to the staph infection in nose. They wither away naturally after a few days.
However the carbuncles which are a group of interconnected furuncles are complex boils and take some time to heal. They also need medical intervention.
Another staph infection is impetigo which forms around the nose and the mouth. The symptom of this type of infection is the formation of scabs made up of dry serum.
Staph infection in nose is highly contagious. It can easily spread by the sharing of personal items such as handkerchiefs, towels, tissues etc. One should avoid close proximity with people suffering from this type of infection.
Application of Vaseline is advisable in case of cuts inside the nose. Generally, the staph nose infection is treated by topical antibiotics. Sometimes the doctors prescribe the use of medicinal honey because honey has certain anti-bacterial properties. The bacterial culture helps the doctors in deciding the course of treatment. If the staph bacteria are highly resistant like the MRSA, then some antibiotics are injected through the veins.
If the symptoms are similar to the ones which are found in case of staph infection in nose, then it is advisable to consult a doctor for a complete check up.
One may use bacitracin, mupirocin or a combination of topical antibiotics in the nose at night for a month or so. The bacitracin ointment can be purchased without a prescription and is not expensive. It should be applied inside the nostrils. If the doctor observes that a person is suffering from resistant staph bacteria then he may prescribe vancomycin.
Studies have shown that constant stuffed noses are breeding grounds for staph bacterial infection. This may not be risky at first but may become later on if a person does not become cautious on getting cuts on skin. Unattended wounds or abrasions may give the bacteria a chance to sneak in. Moreover, sore nipples and eczema which has gone beyond control may also lead to the infection. In some cases, the staph bacteria cause infection all over again after the treatment is completed. In such recurrent infection cases people must avoid picking their nose, and scratching of skin. Oral rifampin should be taken to control the problem.

Boils lance is imperative because with boils one cannot take a chance.
Boils are a common skin problem which can affect people of all ages. They are localized infections mostly caused by a bacterial infection. They appear on the skin some time after the actual infection starts beneath the skin. Their symptoms include inflamed skin which gets reddened and causes irritation. Soon after the rash like symptom appears, a nodule gets formed which grows in size. This is the ideal time to take action because one cannot make out at the very onset whether the boil is going to wither away naturally after some time or give sleepless nights.
The whole process of boils formation should be understood in order to cure them quickly and by using safe methods. Lack of awareness can cause irreversible problems in some cases and bring about the blood infection as in septicemia. The infection can also spread to the internal organs besides the bloodstream if the concept of boil is not fully understood.
Boils are contagious in nature. Hence, a lot of precautions are taken to avoid their spread to other parts of the skin or body. One has to make certain changes in the daily life like taking showers instead of using a bath tub. Scented and colored soaps should be replaced with anti-bacterial soaps.
Once the boil infection starts, the immune system of the body which is well-equipped to face the bacterial invasion sends off the white blood cells towards the boil region to fight off the bacteria. When they finally succeed a tiny head or pustule appears on the head of the boil. This is a sure sign of the boil getting ripe or mature. This is also the ideal time when the boil can be drained. Sometimes the boils are not large or complicated ones like carbuncles and can be treated at home. It is essential to know how to lance boils but one should avoid doing it on ones own as it involves the risk of the spread of the infection. The doctors are better equipped to lance the boils as they have the necessary equipment as well as an understanding of the nuances.
The items which are required in the surgical procedure of boils lancing or draining include:
- An astringent
- Anesthesia
- Sap and water
- Scalpel
- Bandage or gauze
It is not advisable to rupture and drain a boil which has not come to a head. This is a sign of an ongoing infection and implies that the white blood cells have not defeated the staph bacteria completely. To help the boil mature quickly various poultices as well as warm compress method is used. The heat applied to the infected area improves the blood circulation. This brings in more white blood cells to the boil region which kill the bacteria quickly.
The following steps are usually followed in lancing boils:
- Hands have to be washed properly before the lancing the boil.
- The surrounding area has to be thoroughly cleaned.
- The boil area is washed with soap and water followed by hydrogen peroxide.
- If a needle is being used, it should be sterilized.
- The patient is given some support to make him comfortable.
- A cut is made with a scalpel on the head of the boil which should not be very deep. In case of a needle, the prick must also be shallow.
- The opened boil is gently pressed so that the pus may come out.
- The hands as well as the boil area are both cleaned with soap and water immediately.
- The boil area must be allowed to dry up before covering it with gauze or a bandage.
- The boil can erupt again if the infection was deep-seated. Hence, the same procedure has to be used to remove the rest of the pus as it trickles out intermittently.
The area around the boil starts drying up and becomes less sensitive as a sure sign of successful lancing.

A boil is a localized infection which is caused by bacteria named Staphylococcus. The bacteria enter the skin through a cut or by moving down a hair and reaching its follicle.
Initially they are hard and red in color. Eventually, they mature and turn white and soft. This is a defense mechanism of the body to tackle the problem. White blood cells are dispatched to the infected region to kill the bacteria. Therefore the boils turn white due to pus and gradually form a pustule or head.
In most cases, such boils can get cured easily without any medical help. Different types of skin abscess such as carbuncles, furuncles, acne cysts etc. are referred to as boils, for convenience.
Their treatment differs according to their nature and cause of origin.
It is only in some chronic and severe cases that the boils need to be medically examined. Otherwise awareness about them is enough to get rid of them and even in their prevention.
The best home remedy for boils is as follows:
- Honey is an excellent remedy to cure boils because of its anti bacterial properties. Manuka honey when applied on the boil by a cotton pad is an effective cure. It has a tendency of extracting the bacteria through the skin.
- Iodine is applied on the boil to kill the bacteria. It easily penetrates into the infected skin, thereby, accelerating the recovery.
- Epsom salt too pulls the bacteria out. It can be added to the bath tub before taking a bath.15-20 minutes are more than enough for the skin to soak its goodness.
- Tea tree oil is widely used for curing various skin problems due to its antiseptic properties. Though its smell is not a pleasant one, yet it is quite effective. A little oil has to be applied on the boil after a bath.
- Turmeric, with its anti inflammatory and blood purifying properties is a good natural remedy for boils. It can be taken in the form of capsule or by dissolving it in warm water and drinking it. Applying a paste made from turmeric on the boil and covering it is also effective .However in this case care should be taken since it stains the clothes.
- Onion and garlic juice is mixed in an equal proportion and applied on the boil. This hastens the ripening of the boils. Thus the pus is formed and the pustule also develops, soon after which the boil gets drained.
- Milk cream is one of the best home remedy for boils. When used as a poultice along with a little turmeric powder and vinegar, it ripens the boils faster and heals them without developing infections.
- Soaking pads in hot water and applying it on the boils 3-4 times daily also helps in their quick ripening and healing. Such heat treatment is also considered to be one of the best home remedy for boils.
- Betel leaves are warmed and smeared with castor oil. They boils are then covered by these leaves. The leaf is changed after short intervals. It helps in curing the boils as it is said to have therapeutic properties.
- Margosa leaves can be used as a poultice or a decoction to cure boils
Since boils are contagious, they should be dealt with care. Pricking or squeezing them is considered risky as the infection may spread to other regions and cause complication. They should be lanced only after they have ripened and formed a head.

A furuncle is a staph infection in which the sebaceous glands get affected. It is a deep-seated infection in which the hair follicle gets destroyed completely.
There are different types of furuncles such as mole cricket furuncle, tipped furuncle etc.
Boil furuncle can develop as a result of bacterial invasion into the skin through microscopic openings, minor cuts on the skin etc. Some times foreign particles such as splinters may get inside the skin. These objects may be infected with germs.
Besides the external reasons there are some other factors which cause furuncles. They include obesity, diabetes, blood impurities and steroid medicines
In diabetic people the staph bacteria are present in the nasal chambers. They tend to colonize there. Such bacterial colonies are not harmful to the humans. However, if the bacteria get an opportunity to invade the body they start breeding within.
The main causes of furuncles are:
- The bacteria named Staphylococcus aurous.
- Macerated skin
- Unhygienic environment.
- High intake of carbohydrates such as mangoes during monsoons which bring about mango boils.
- Weak immune system.
The symptoms of the boil furuncle include appearance of a reddened itchy area where a tender nodule develops. This nodule becomes large after some time. When the infection reaches its peak the boil becomes whitish in color due to the presence of pus. This happens when the body sends the white blood cells to the infected region to destroy the germs. The pus which forms when the boil furuncle is ready to suppurate consists of the white blood cells, bacteria and the dead skin tissues. Gradually the bacteria get defeated. By this time the boil ripens and forms a pustule or a head. After this the boil discharges the pus and gets healed.
Mild boils get healed naturally by the defense system of the body. They appear, mature, discharge pus and wither away. Hence there is no need for any treatment. However, in some cases where the infection is severe, the boils take a long time to form a pustule. Severe furuncles are treated with antibiotics such as cephalexin.
In case of a severe furuncle the treatment includes:
- Lancing or surgical drainage of the boil after it has ripened.
- A course of broad-spectrum antibiotics are prescribed.
- Bacterial culture is done to identify the root-cause of the infection.
- Keeping the infected region clean by using antiseptic lotions.
Furuncles can be prevented by following these methods:
- Fatty food, sugars and processed food should be replaced with a well balanced diet full of vitamins and minerals and other essential nutrients. A healthy diet builds up the immune system.
- Sulphur spring baths and sun bathing is an effective method of curbing boils.
Furuncles can be healed faster by using poultices. These poultices help the boils to suppurate faster.
The most effective and time-tested method of treating painful boils is that of hydrotherapy. This can be done in two ways. A strip of cloth is placed over the boil after being soaked in hot water and being wringed out. This has to be done a few times daily. The other method is that of hot and cold compression in which the hot water strip is followed by an icy cold cloth which has been dipped in cold water. This hot and cold compression given in an alternate way helps the boil form a head and heal quickly.

Boils are localized skin infections usually brought about by the staph bacteria. They can occur on any part of the skin but tend to affect certain areas like the face, neck, shoulders and armpits. They are found to affect those areas more which are exposed to a lot of friction and are hairy. The human skin is quite delicate and if it gets constantly rubbed or bruised, it tends to give way to the micro-organisms like the bacteria. These germs get a breeding ground within the human body thereby leading to an infection.
Neck boils mostly occur on the neck just below the hairline. These boils are quite sensitive to touch and tender. These boils are caused by the bacterial known as the Staphylococcus aurous.
This bacterium is mostly responsible for occurrence of boils on the skin. It gets a chance to enter the skin via cuts or in the form of dust.
It can also be present on the skin of a person from where it slips into the hair follicle through some wound or cut.
In some individuals these germs are present due to heredity. So even if the people are healthy otherwise, they are prone to recurrent boils syndrome due to the colonies of these bacteria found on their skin or in their nasal passages as in the case of diabetics, HIV positive patients etc.
In such cases it becomes imperative to go for a bacterial culture which helps in determining the kind of bacteria which may be causing the boils.
If recurrent boils problem affects all the members in the family then a bacterial culture is essential for all the members to find out the actual carrier. These germs tend to spread not just within a persons body but also amongst different family members. Hence it is advised to use separate towels, napkins and other personal items.
Based on the bacterial test the doctor decides which antibiotics would be useful in killing the germs. In certain cases the bacteria are found to be MRSA. Such bacteria have developed resistance towards certain antibiotics. Hence the treatment for them has to be altered and some other powerful antibiotics are prescribed.
Boils in the neck regions can be brought about by:
- Constant irritation of the neck skin by collars.
- Oil ducts getting choked up with dirt or sebum.
- Internal reasons like impurities in the bloodstream.
The neck boils are found to be cystic acne in most cases and need to be dealt with urgently.
Their symptoms include the appearance of a red patch of skin followed by a nodule which increases in size and lastly develops white pus. In its final stage the boil develops a head or a pustule through which the accumulated pus gets discharged.
Neck boils should not be meddled with as they may end up scarring the skin or leaving pits on the skin’s surface.
Although our body is equipped to deal with such infections yet medical supervision becomes necessary in some cases. This is mainly because boils are contagious by nature and can also be a sign of some internal problem which the doctor needs to find out.
Ways to control the menace of boils include:
- Maintenance of hygiene by using anti-bacterial creams and soaps.
- One should stick to a well-balanced diet instead of having junk food and loads of sugar, saturated fats, processed food or food with added colors and flavors. This is mainly because such foods contain chemicals. Moreover, healthy food provides nourishment to the body which helps in building up a strong immune system which is essential to fight off the infections.
- A healthy lifestyle is also needed. Smoking and drinking should be abstained from.
- Sunbath is also beneficial in eradicating boils but it should be taken within a limit to avoid sun burns.
In case of neck boils the lymph glands should be examined carefully. If they are found to be swollen and tender this implies that the bacterial infection has spread to the lymph glands. The doctor should be consulted immediately. Some of the other signs which indicate some internal disorder and which require medical interventions are recurrent boil, fever and lethargy along with the boils and red streaks spreading all around the boil.

The staph infection is caused by the bacterium named Staphylococcus aurous. It belongs to a group of bacteria called Staphylococcus. Amongst the group of 30 Staphylococci it is mostly the Staphylococcus aurous which causes infections in humans such as boils, impetigo, food poisoning, cellulitis, toxic shock syndrome, scalded skin syndrome and mastitis.
Such infections can affect almost anyone but there are some people who are vulnerable to this bacterial infection. Such people include:
- Lactating women
- Newly born babies
- People suffering from chronic ailments such as diabetes, vascular disease, cancer, lung problems, intravenous catheters and surgical incisions.
- People who suffer from a weak immune system.
The staph bacteria may be present in the nasal chambers, groin and the rectum of healthy people too. This bacterial colonization is harmless and does not create any health problems. However, in certain cases the skin, which is resistant to such germs gets ruptured by cuts, abrasions, bruises etc. This gives a byway to the prowling bacteria which need a breeding ground. Once they enter into the skin they get favorable conditions for multiplying and start an infection.
The cause of staph infection:
- Eating food which has been contaminated with toxins produced by the bacterium, Staphylococcus aurous.
- Not keeping a safe distance with those people who have been infected by the staph bacteria.
- Not using low- absorbency tampons during menstruation by women and not changing them frequently.
- Not taking adequate care to prepare and handle food with clean hands.
- Keeping cuts and wounds open and not disinfecting them with an anti-bacterial lotion.
- Not keeping ones facial skin well scrubbed.
- Sitting for prolonged hours without taking a break in between.
- Wearing skin fitted cloth and fabrics which do not absorb sweat.
- Not taking a well balanced diet. Without the required vitamins and minerals the body’s immune system gets weakened.
- Living in unhygienic and crowded conditions.
- Cutting hair too close to the skin which results in ingrown hair which brings about a staph infection.
- Exposing one’s skin to dust and dirt.
- Using perfumed soaps instead of an anti-bacterial one.
The causes of staph infections which bring about drastic consequences are as follows:
- Biting of lips with a boil nearby.
- Squeezing of boils can spread the infection internally to some organ or the blood.
- Not paying heed to the boil which shows no signs of recovery even after a couple of weeks.
- Not getting a bacterial culture done to ascertain who the carrier of the staph bacteria is, in case the infection spreads within a family. Lack of proper diagnosis and timely treatment can have serious consequences.
The Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aurous, better known as MRSA, is a type of bacterium that is resistant to the antibiotic methicillin and some other drugs in this category. The diagnosis of this MRSA is necessary to control the spread of the infection. Once the tests determine the severity of the MRSA infection, the most suitable antibiotic treatment is given to the patients. The boils which appear on the skin are an outcome of a bacterial infection.
The bacteria get into the skin through minor rashes or broken skin. These germs are on the look out for breeding grounds and do not spare any chance to spread to other areas.
Under such circumstances is becomes imperative to stop the infection from spreading.
Awareness about the boil infection can help a person in controlling it before it leads to drastic consequences.
If a timely action is not taken, the boils can cause a lot of pain. Moreover, lack of proper information about handling boils can lead to blood poisoning. This is because squeezing or pressing boils in an attempt to remove the pus can be quite risky. It may spread the infection to other parts beneath the skin. The infection can also affect other internal organs besides the bloodstream.
Hence it is important that boils are treated seriously. If the boils are mild then they would not require medical treatment.
Keeping the infected area clean with a germicide such as campho phenique can be helpful. Campho phenique is a clear, transparent and volatile fluid. It is hot and aromatic in taste.
It is prepared by heating carbolic acid and pouring it into a container with camphor-gum.
The properties due to which medical practitioners prefer campho phenique for boils are as follows:
- It is an anti-septic agent
- It has germicidal properties
- It kills parasites.
- It is non-irritant and non-poisonous.
- It does not cause stains or discoloration.
- It does not have a bad odor or taste.
- It prevents infections if applied immediately over fresh wounds or cuts.
- As a local anesthetic it brings down pain.
- It is safe enough to be used on broken skin.
- It does not contain toxins or caustic properties.
- As an antiseptic it can manage to penetrate deep into the infected skin.
- It prevents a secondary infection in the skin.
- It relieves the person of the pain due to the boil and promotes healing.
- It is considered to be one of the safes germicides.
One can use campho phenique for boils in the following ways:
- A piece of gauze should be cut that is big enough to cover the entire boil. Some campho phenique should be poured over the gauze and placed over the infected part.
- A slight pressure should be applied over the gauze for some time. If the boil has a mild infection then immediate results can be seen. Otherwise it is better to leave the gauze overnight.
If the boil goes beyond the stage where it can be controlled in an effective way with campho phenique then it should be medically examined.
A complete medical check up helps in the following ways:
- Tests help the doctor in getting sure about the actual underlying cause of the boil.
- A bacterial culture helps in knowing about the type of bacteria which is causing the boils. This is done mainly to know whether an MRSA is involved.
- In certain cases the boils spread within a family. Tests also help in understanding that which person is the actual carrier of the germs.

A carbuncle is a type of boil that is caused by the staph bacteria. It is a localized skin infection in which a group of furuncles club together. It has several tiny openings through which the accumulated pus gets expelled from the boil after it ripens. Carbuncles are deep-seated infections which affect the subcutaneous tissues.
The mild carbuncles have the following symptoms:
- They grows quite fast
- They may ooze or form a crust.
- They may spread to other areas.
- A feeling of malaise.
- Fever and lethargy.
If the carbuncle is caused due to some serious internal disorder then the symptoms may include:
- Red lines running all around the boil.
- The carbuncle may occur on the face or the spine.
- The nearby areas swell up and the boil does not show any signs of drying up in spite of treatment, till a week or so.
In such cases a medical examination may be indispensable to curb the problem. A bacterial culture, urine test or a skin biopsy helps in establishing the internal problem which leads to carbuncles.
The carbuncle treatment helps in relieving the pain and discomfort. The best treatment which can be given to a person with carbuncles includes:
- A cotton swab dabbed in tea tree oil should be gently applied over the carbuncle for several times in a day. Tea tree oil is an effective remedy to cure carbuncles due to its antifungal, antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties.
- Turmeric powder should be added to a glass of water. This should be taken thrice daily. Turmeric capsules can also be taken as an alternative. Turmeric makes a good medicine for carbuncles because it is a blood purifying and anti-inflammatory agent.
- Hydrotherapy relieves the boil pain effectively. A warm or wet compress helps in increasing the blood flow towards the boil. This brings in more white blood cells to fight off the bacteria.
- Bread poultice is made by dipping a slice of bread in warm milk and then placing it over the carbuncle directly. This imparts gentle heat to the boil and helps it in ripening quickly. This method should be repeated for several times in a day till for best results.
- Vegetable compress such as heated slices of tomatoes, mashed garlic or the leaves of cabbage can be placed over the carbuncle to ripen it quickly. The warm chunks of these vegetables should be replaced as soon as they get cooled down.
- Black seed oil is an age old remedy for curing carbuncles. Half a teaspoon of this oil should be mixed with a hot or cold drink and taken two times in a day.
- A warm tea-bag makes a good remedy for helping the carbuncle to come to its head.
- Onion slice can be placed over the boil and wrapped with a cloth. Onions are effective antiseptic as well as antimicrobial agents.
- Herbs such as Echinacea are useful remedies for treating carbuncles. They cleanse the blood and help the antibodies to circulate better and kill the bacteria. Echinacea can be taken in the form of a capsule.
- Carbuncles treatment in homeopathy includes Arsenicum album, Anthracinum, Lachesis etc for reducing inflammation and controlling the infection.

Boils are red, inflamed and pus -filled skin abscesses which appear on the skin when there is an ongoing infection. The skin gets exposed to a lot of dirt, dust, bruises, rashes, and cuts. These pave the way for the bacteria to enter in to it and infect it.
The medical treatment for boils includes lancing and controlling the infection with antibiotics.
Using boil ointment is another effective method of curing the infection. This method can be done at home at ones own convenience. If the boil ointment treatment is given at the correct time the boils may get suppressed at an early stage and will not bring about pain.
Boils are categorized into furuncles and carbuncles. Cystic acne, pimples, pilonidal cysts are also different types of skin abscesses. The infection in all the various types of boils is caused by the staph bacteria. It is only the severity which differs and sometimes the locations.
Detailed scientific research has been done to study the factors which lead to the infection and the germs which cause them. The scientists have identified some natural substances which are powerful potions for the boils. These substances are commonly used in the preparation of the boil ointment. They are as follows:
- Calendula Officinalis naturally occurs in the marigold flower. It is used in ointments mainly because of its anti-septic and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Echinacea Angustifolia naturally occurs in the coneflower. It is added to ointments due to its anti-septic properties and to control the spread of the infection.
- Sulphur is extensively used to treat skin related problems. It reduces itchiness, dryness and the burning sensation in boils.
Besides these ointments there are some simple methods of making one’s own boil ointment at home. The methods are as follows:
- A cumin seed paste can be prepared by mixing a little hot water to the seeds and grinding them into a paste.
- Onion and garlic are grinded together to form a paste. The paste is effective in helping the boil suppurate. It also helps the wound to dry up quickly.
- Milk cream can be applied to the boil to help it heal faster. It can also be mixed with a slice of bread and used as a poultice for better results.
- Turmeric is a power herb which is being used since ages to cure health problems. Its paste is made by mixing its powder with hot water. It is a blood cleanser and also an anti-inflammatory agent.
- Black drawing salve is also called Black ointment. It is a blend of the herbs, roots and oils which have a soothing effect on the skin. Hence it is used to cure boils.
Certain precautions should be taken before opting for the ointment treatment of the boils, such as:
- Children below the age of 12 should be given an ointment treatment only after consulting a doctor.
- Ointments should be avoided during pregnancy and the lactation period.
- Diabetics and people suffering from immune degrading ailments should avoid ointments.

Boils are the outcome of a bacterial infection in the skin. They result in the formation of pus-filled pockets beneath the human skin.
Most of the boils wither away naturally after completing their life-cycle. However, there are some boils which take quite long to ripen and form a head. Such boils get painful and also cause discomfort if they are located in places such as buttocks or under arms.
It is only after the boil ripens that the pus can get discharged from it, naturally or manually as in lancing.
Hence it is imperative that the boil gets matured quickly. This is where the poultice for boils plays an important role.
The poultices are a safe and simple home treatment. They consist of herbs and some other easily available substances. They can be warm or cold in nature. The warm ones help to bring the boil to a head by increasing the blood flow to the boil region. The cold ones soothe the boil and reduce inflammation of the skin. The warm poultices should be replaced as soon as they cool down. This process is repeated a few times daily till the boil ripens. The time taken by the boil to form a head or a pustule depends on the severity of the infection.
Some of best poultice boil treatments are mentioned below:
- Bran poultice is made by mixing bran with hot water. The mixture is applied over the boil once it reaches a tolerable temperature. Besides helping the boil in coming to a head, this poultice is effective in reducing the inflammation in the boil.
- Carrots poultice is prepared by making a pulp out of boiled carrots. This poultice is very good for acnes and boils.
- Clay poultice is made by cleaning the clay of all the impurities and then mixing it with apple cider or water to form a paste.
- Potato poultice is made by mixing grated potatoes to boiling water. It is effective in case of carbuncles.
- Strawberry poultice is prepared by making a pulp out of wild strawberries. This is an effective poultice for reducing inflammation.
- Kava is an ancient plant which has antiseptic properties. Its dry roots are used to prepare a poultice for boils.
- Plantain poultice is made by making a paste out of fresh plantain leaves. This poultice draws out the pus quickly by ripening the boil.
- Goldenseal poultice is made by mixing the powder of the goldenseal root with water. This poultice is not placed directly over the boil but on a linen cloth. This paste helps in healing the boils because of its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Lavender poultice is made by mixing lavender with tea tree oil. It should be wrapped with a net and a clean towel. This poultice should be applied for 24 hours for best results. Once it is removed the area should be gently wiped with an anti-bacterial solution.
- Bread and milk poultice is prepared by mixing bread with hot milk and mashing it. This mixture is placed over the boil.
- Milk cream can also serve the purpose of a poultice.
- Betel leaf poultice can be made by warming the leaf slightly and smearing some castor oil on its surface.
